Free SAT (2024) Tutoring @ Troy Community Center

Free SAT Tutoring at the Troy Community Center - Saturdays - March 2nd, March 9th, March 16th, and April 6th (All Dates 1-4:30pm / Room 301)

Who - my name is Alex Karpowitsch. I am 38 years old, and work for Rockwell Automation. I graduated from Troy High School in 2004, and purchased a home in Troy in September 2021. I have recently taken an interest in Troy School District academics, and would like to give back to the Troy Community.

What - We will go through one full length SAT practice exam per session. You can find the SAT Practice Exams here, and print out the corresponding PDFs - https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/practice-preparation/practice-tests/linear

Yes, the SAT is going Digital in March 2024, but we will go through sample exam questions on paper. Please print out the PDF for the corresponding exam (March 2nd session = SAT Practice Test 1' / March 9th session = SAT Practice Test 2, etc.) prior to each session. I'll try to bring some extra copies of the practice exam with me. Please also bring some scratch paper + approved calculator (https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/what-to-bring-do/calculator-policy)

We will be reviewing problems from the printed PDF practice exams, for the Reading and Math sections of the practice exam. We will not cover the Essay portion of the SAT. We will spend a few minutes on each problem, which is typically longer than the time needed in order to answer every question. Speed comes with practice. I encourage you to practice SAT questions on your own time so that you may gain the proficiency/speed needed to answer every question.

Kahn Academy offers Official SAT Prep on their website - https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/digital-sat

I encourage you to complete the Kahn Academy practice prior to our first session on March 2nd.

Anyone can attend these sessions - students along with their parents. Obviously this material is mostly relevant to 11th Graders.

I plan on recording / live streaming our practice sessions on YouTube. I will have my computer hooked up to a projector and you will see my exam questions + scratch paper I use to document solving the problem on the projector. The only video portion that will be live streamed will be my exam / scratch paper I use to solve each question. Students in the room will not be filmed, although our (audio) dialogue solving the exam questions will be part of the live stream/recording.

When - Saturdays - March 2nd, March 9th, March 16th, and April 6th from 1pm-4:30pm.

Where - The Troy Community Center (3179 Livernois Rd, Troy, MI 48083), Room 301. Room 301 is easily accessed via the Livernois Road entrance to the Troy Community Center.

Why - I believe we owe it to Troy Students to get their Math & Reading proficiency back to Pre-Covid levels - https://www.keeptroyhonors.com/metro-detroit-public-school-sat-scores-from/

I will send a reminder email on Thursday & Friday next week with PDFs of Practice Test 1.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I can be reached through at akarpo at gmail dot com.

Kind regards,

  • Alex
